DVD Review: The Human Centipede

There’s a movie that has been talked about for the last few months as being one of the most disturbing to be released in a while. A truly bizarre movie that tells of the reverse engineering of the Siamese twins process using their gastric systems. That’s right, The Human Centipede is being released on to an unsuspecting public. Be afraid.

The Human Centipedetells of German surgeon Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser – Lexx), whose specialty was separating Siamese twins. In his retirement, the good doctor wants to reverse the process, using American tourists Lindsay (Ashley C. Williams – debut), Jennie (Ashlynn Yennie – Fetch), and Japanese tourist Katsuro (Akihiro Kitamura – Heroes). The operation is successful but problems arise resulting mainly from language barriers.

The Human Centipedeis a fantastically disturbing movie, not gory, but intellectually disturbing. It starts when Dr. Heiter explains, in detail, what his plan is and all the details the operation entails. That’s not bad you think. Well he explains it to the captives so they know what’s going to happen.  And then it gets bad.

The Human Centipede is a masterpiece of horror originality. This movie is deeply disturbing on an emotional and intellectual level. And like an accident on the freeway, once you start watching you can’t look away. In fact you may turn around to see it again, because you can’t believe it really happened (I did). The effects are realistic, and according to the director accurate. In fact the writer/director, Tom Six, states that the procedure is 100% medically accurate. And that this is the first sequence, and the sequel (the full sequence) will eclipse this one. This movie is a must see, at least once. Be afraid.

ComicsOnline gives The Human Centipede 4 ½ misguided surgeries out of 5.
