ComicsOnline Gift Guide 2010: Top 5 Geek Releases of 2010

It’s that time again…The holidays are coming up and all of our significant others are trying to figure out exactly what to get their geeky counterparts. Well fear not, because Matt is here with a list of the Top 5 Geek Blu-ray Releases from 2010:

5. Wolverine and the X-Men The Complete Series

The XMen are back and this time we finally get to see a larger portion of the X-Universe. The overarching story of saving the future from the Sentinels has really gone a long way to make this series stand out from its predecessors. It is incredibly fun to watch this show and try and find all of the cameos that have been thrown in. But the best part is, that these cameos are not forced. They are handled beautifully and they actually make a lot of sense.
The team behind Wolverine and the XMen has proven that they can take classic XMen storylines and adapt them to a modern setting. The continuing effort to stop the future from Days of Future’s Past has been an exciting tale. The ever increasing number of cameos in the series helps to maintain an exciting element of surprise within each episode.

This release provides some of the best animated XMen action in years, and fans of previous XMen series shouldn’t hesitate to check out Wolverine and the XMen whenever they can.

4. Stargate Universe Season 1 and Season 1.5

Stargate Universe is a very unique take on things.  Removing the series from all the conventional Stargate imagery and standbys, the series takes place far far away from any of the events of SG-1 and Atlantis. Universe takes the Stargate story in a new direction as humanity’s search for answers about the nature of existence takes them to the far reaches of the Universe by using the newly activated 9th Chevron on the Stargate.

3. Doctor Who – Series 5

Perfect for young and old, with a completely new Doctor and brand new start, there has never been a better time to jump on board the TARDIS with Doctor Who! It is one of the most memorable Sci-Fi shows you will experience and after its over, will have you not very patiently awaiting the next season to hit US shores!

Matt Smith’s Doctor is set up very well and couldn’t be any more different than Tennant’s Doctor but still just as quirky and charming as ever. The Doctor’s classic know-it-all attitude is back once again in full force and is even more eccentric than ever before! Once you see him in action you will believe that bow ties (and fezzes) ARE cool!

2. Batman: Under the Red Hood

Based on pieces from the comic storylines of “Batman: Under the Hood” and “Batman: A Death in the Family”, Under the Red Hood begins with the latter and has Batman racing to save Robin from the clutches of The Joker (John DiMaggio).  Months later, a new criminal “The Red Hood” (Jensen Ackles) begins taking over control of Gotham’s drug ring from the control of Black Mask (Wade Williams).  Batman (Bruce Greenwood) and Nightwing (Neil Patrick Harris) join forces in an attempt to capture this new foe.

This is the darkest of the DC Animated releases and also prooves to be the best. This is a must have for any Batman fan.

1. Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Edition Trilogy on Blu-ray

Without hesitation, Back to the Future on Blu-ray is my top pick of the year. The team involved in putting this set together really went above and beyond to make sure that we would be getting the best release possible. The remastered sound and restored video make the trilogy feel better than ever. The colors are bright and vivid. The audio is crisp and clean. Highlights include: Story boards of the alternate Nuclear Test Site Ending, Feature Commentaries with Bob Gale and Neil Canton, look at a Hoverboard Test, 16 Deleted Scenes, and the “Tales from The Future” Documentary series. When you watch this release in 1080p, you too will be yelling “Great Scott”!

Bonus Points:

In case you already have all of these movies (and bonus points if you do) here are some backup choices that are equally as awesome and only got edged out because Top 5 sounds better than Top 8:

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

LOST- The Complete 6th and Final Season

Doctor Who – The Complete Specials Collection

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
