ComicsOnline Gift Guide 2010: Comics Part 2: Top 5 Comics Series for Giving

Ho Ho Ho.

Okay so it’s the weekend prior to Christmas and you’ve been busy, busy, busy. I can relate. Buying for that special Comic Fan in your life is not easy unless you know what they read, what they’ve already read and whether they read issues or collected volumes. Beyond that they may have once read comic books have since stopped and now only collect merchandise that they like about a favorite character.

My list below are books I’m looking for but tastes differ, if you need a specific suggestion use the e-mail I’ve included below and I’ll do my best to help you out. Some readers like horror, or independent more then me and some like manga, romance or kid friendly titles and that’s great but, the list below is mostly for a Marvel/DC junkie like me

No matter what the situation I have suggestions.

Part 2: Top 5 Comics series If you didn’t read might be worth reading as a gift. (Be careful you could get hooked)

This selection concentrates on all titles.

If you have your own suggestions or questions feel free to write me directly at [email protected] Above all else have a Happy Holiday!

Without further delay check out my Top 5 list by clicking on Read More:

1. Fables (14 collected volumes)

This series is truly a remarkable story and it’s not what I’d ever expect a comic guy like me to gravitate to. I literally find myself re-evaluating which characters are my favorites every arc because the story and characters are so rich with potential and back story. Seriously pick up the first volume and just keep reading. It’s that good.

2. Green Lantern

This is not a news flash but Green Lantern has been one of the best truly comic book reading experiences for the past few years. Geoff Johns has literally taken the existing Green Lantern villains and mythology and given it new life and expanded it by at least 6 or 7 colors. Rebirth through Blackest Night reads well on it’s own but serves as an epic prologue to perhaps the biggest crossover in years. That being Blackest Night. Crossovers are generally over hyped pieces of reindeer droppings. I’m talking to you Brian Michael Bendis. This was a good crossover that literally had important story developments that has truly impacted current and ongoing stories.

3. Secret Six

I love this series and I have almost no one to talk to about it. Some of the best writing is in this book. I keep hoping that if DC were truly looking to bring a property to television or film they’d look at this one. I think Secret Six would be to comics what Tru Blood is to vampires. It’s clearly to dark and edgy for basic TV but the relationships, banter and dysfunction in this book is very addicting. It’s the first book I must read on the week it comes out. I’ve told you almost nothing about the story or characters themselves but you should just go read it.

4. Amazing Spider-Man

The book looks like it may be doing some interesting things with Peter and I like what I’m seeing so far. I won’t bother explaining to you who Spiderman is. That would be silly. The current story “Big Time” which just released it’s second part this week is what I’m talking about.

5. Nemesis 1-3

Mark Millar and Steve McNiven take a crack at writing a character that has been described as what would happen if Batman had gone down a decidedly evil path. Great art and shockingly violent action with what could develop into a good story make this a fun read for older readers.
