Comic News: Dwayne McDuffie, Comics and Animation Icon Dies at Age 49

Iconic comic book and animation scribe Dwayne McDuffie has passed away only one day after his 49th Birthday. He died as a result of complications from a surgical procedure performed on Monday Evening.

McDuffie has written for Marvel, DC Comics and the animation industry for many years having worked on such shows as Justice League, Ben 10 and numerous DC animated projects including the just released All Star Superman originally a limited series written by Grant Morrison. McDuffie was a founder of Milestone Comics which launched in the early 90’s with the mission of bringing diversity to comics.

He was quoted as having said: “If you do a black character or a female character or an Asian character, then they aren’t just that character. They represent that race or that sex, and they can’t be interesting because everything they do has to represent an entire block of people. You know, Superman isn’t all white people and neither is Lex Luthor. We knew we had to present a range of characters within each ethnic group, which means that we couldn’t do just one book. We had to do a series of books and we had to present a view of the world that’s wider than the world we’ve seen before.”

Milestone was in recent years folded into the mainstream DC Comics continuity with several characters appearing in Justice League and Static joining the Teen Titans. On a personal note I’d like to thank Dwayne for remaking John Stewart into a Green Lantern I could love. Dwayne was always wonderful in person as I had the pleasure of interviewing him twice for DC Animated projects at the Paley Center in the past few years. He will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.
