iPad Game Review: Thor Son of Asgard

by C P

You’ve seen the movie right? If you haven’t read our review on it and then get your butt into a theater and watch it already!

Okay, you’re back, you’ve seen the movie. Now, buy the game on your iPad or iPhone! Thor: Son of Asgard, now available in the App Store, is a fun game where players assume the role of Thor and take an epic journey to defend Odin’s Kingdom.

Let me clarify that the game has NOTHING to do with the movie. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but don’t buy the gaming thinking it’s based off the movie.

Lets start with the good…it kept my attention span for about an hour and a half. Each of the levels take about 2 to 5 minutes to complete. There are in game stats telling how much ass-kicking you delivered on your foes with Thor’s Mighty Hammer. Also, which drew to keep playing and come back after a break is the in game achievements (because no one likes playing a pointless game). You can unlock cover art from the comics and even unlock the Jack Kirby Thor Outfit (which is by far the best IMO).

Additionally, if you quit the game you can continue or start back at a previous chapter of the game. There are 6 chapters in all so if you are good enough, you can probably complete the game in about 2 to 3 hours (unlocking everything and the achievements). The graphics are good but not spectacular, they remind me of something like Warcraft III. The sound effects are of good quality, but can get a little annoying so if you like, you can turn them down.

The bad…I dont know whether its the controls or the graphic layout of the land, but the game has a few bugs. A few times I got Thor stuck or couldn’t get him to move forward in the level, he would just sort of moonwalk (which looks cool, but is so frustrating). I also had an issue with the in-world camera bugging out. At one point, it stopped following Thor and remained static which also didn’t let me continue in the level. I also had three moments where the game quit on its own, but thanks to the “continue” option I wasn’t far from where I left off.

Overall the game is fun, but not something you have to buy. If you like Thor and enjoy kicking people’s asses, then you will probably enjoy this game for a bit.
