Blu-ray Review: Doctor Who: The Snowmen

Doctor Who

It’s bigger on the inside!

by Gema Luna and Daniel Reamer, Editors

The Doctor is back for another Christmas adventure in Doctor Who: The Snowmen – now available on Blu-ray!

When snow falls on a Christmas Eve it’s supposed to be magical, but when strange snowmen come to life and threaten humankind… it turns Christmas into a living nightmare. Following the departure of the Ponds, the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) seems lost. Just when he is about to give up hope, he gets some help of old friends and a very curious woman named Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman, Captain America: The First Avenger). Can The Doctor rally to the occasion and save the day on Christmas once more?

With his friends lost following a confrontation with the Weeping Angels, The Doctor has decided to remove himself from the world. Hidden away in 1892, the illustrious Time Lord has had enough of traveling through space and time. A familiar cast of characters still surrounds The Doctor, as Madam Vastra, Jenny, and Strax play an integral role in helping their friend get past his grief. When a mysterious Governess named Clara appears, The Doctor suddenly finds himself interested in stepping outside of his bubble. With the help of Madam Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and clever word play, Clara states the only word that could possibly bring him back to reality: Pond.

This episode brings us the new/old enemy, The Great Intelligence, as well as the second time that we get a glimpse of the new companion, Clara. We also learn the magic words that ultimately will save the Doctor: “Run you clever boy…and remember”.

With the high quality imagery that we have grown accustomed to with the newer Doctor Who installments, this episode becomes even more enjoyable on Blu-ray.  The clarity in the episode is impressive and the special effects are mesmerizing. The episode gives us a real look at Victorian England. The details of the costumes, make-up and places are very enjoyable and clear on the HD quality that only a Blu-ray can give.

Special Features:

The features on this Blu-ray are minimal, but are still a required watch for any true Doctor Who fan.

  • Clara’s White Christmas: A behind the scenes look at how they make London look like Victorian London, from covering the streets with white snow to the minimal details that entails creating the Doctor Who scenes. How, after many years, they finally got the “It’s bigger-in-the-inside” shot of the TARDIS, and how they made the beautiful spot in the clouds for it.
  • Vastra Investigates and The Great Detective: Two prequel teasers that were released prior to the annual Christmas special.

Overall

Doctor Who: The Snowmen was great episode that had some great payoff using special effects. The Blu-ray quality of this episode made even the minor details even better the second time around. The Doctor and Clara will return in Doctor Who: Series 7, Part 2 – also available on Blu-ray!
