DVD Review: Adventure Time: Jake the Dad

original

Oh my Glob. Did you hear that Cartoon Network is releasing a new Adventure Time DVD with a super mathematical Jake the Dog hat? No? Where have you been, man? Writing a book about the power of your space lumps? Traveling to Mars to save your best friend’s life? Or were you growing old in a land made completely out of pillows? Well, get with the program and check out the latest DVD release from the AT series, Adventure Time: Jake the Dad!

Currently in its fifth season, Adventure Time is the off the wall cartoon from Pendleton Ward that follows the adventures of Jake the Dog, Finn the Human, and a myriad of other wonderfully bizarre characters. The show is set in the post-apocalyptic land of Ooo, and its zany, imaginative episodes have endeared it to fans of all ages.

The complete first and second seasons of the series are now available on DVD and Blu-ray, along with other episodic releases, My Two Favorite People, It Came From the Nightosphere, Jake vs Me-Meow, and Fionna and Cake. The newest DVD to join the collection is Adventure Time: Jake the Dad, and you’ll be able to get your greedy little paws onto it on September 17th!

Adventure Time: Jake the Dad was an absolute blast to watch and is definitely a new favorite in my movie collection. Fans of the series are absolutely going to want to get a hold of this one. While of course I’m a fan of owning the complete seasons, the episodic releases take the best episodes from past seasons and cram them together into two and a half hours of utter hilarity. Jake the Dad is no exception, and this DVD contains sixteen of the of best episodes from seasons four and five. It starts off with the titular “Jake the Dad”, where we get to meet Jake and Lady Rainicorn’s five brand new pups; Charlie, T.V., Viola, Kim Kil Whan, and Jake Jr. We get to watch as Jake embraces fatherhood and realizes that maybe it’s not exactly what he was expecting it to be, especially when his newborn pups join forces to save Jake from a hoard of baby-eating foxes.

We also get some other amazing episodes like “BMO Noire”, where Detective BMO takes on the case of Finn’s missing sock and plays out an entire film noire in the process. Whodunnit? Was it Ronnie the mouse? Bebe the remote control? Or was there something in Lorraine the chicken’s eye? With BMO on the case, you know this mystery is as good as solved.

In the episodes “I Remember You” and “Simon and Marcy” we get to dive into the complicated but wonderful pasts of the Ice King and Marceline the Vampire Queen to find out just how they’re connected.  This series can be incredibly silly and will never have any shortage of wacky antics.  Yet at the same time, it can also be genuine, with a great deal of heart. Once upon a time, the Ice King was a goofy, good-hearted man named Simon who found tiny Marceline all alone after the apocalypse.  They traveled together and loved each other, but Simon began to change when he used his ice powers to protect Marcy from post apocalyptic monsters. Though she begged him not to, he used his powers until he completely forgot the man he used to be. Marceline never did though, and their relationship is truly heartbreaking and sweet all at the same time.

The DVD contains 16 episodes from seasons four and five, as well as a special “Little Did You Know” feature that introduces you to each of Jake’s pups and gives a little extra information. It was a cute feature with a couple of short tidbits of information, but the real prize in this cereal box is the awesome fleece Jake hat that comes tucked away with the DVD. It’s a perfect complement to the Finn hat that was released with last year’s Jake vs Me-Meow DVD. The hat is warm and cozy and will put a smile on any Adventure Time fan’s face. Including this fan.

If you’re a fan of the series and love having these adventures right at your fingertips, you’re definitely going to want to pick up a copy of this DVD. With the Jake hat included (normally a $20 value) this is an awesome deal and a pretty stylish one too. Make sure you don’t miss out on it.
