There must always be a balance in the universe. Wherever there is evil, there will always be good. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC Entertainment put this premise to the test with the release of their new documentary: Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics.

Narrated by Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Necessary Evil focuses on the relationship between good and evil, and the reason why these villains have become icons in their own right. This feature includes new interviews with Geoff John (Green Lantern), Scott Snyder (Batman), Len Wein (Swamp Thing), Jim Lee (Batman), Andrea Romano (Batman: The Animated Series), Clancy Brown (Superman: The Animated Series), Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series), Zack Snyder (Man of Steel), Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim), Richard Donner (Superman: The Movie), and more.

Focusing on villains big and small, Necessary Evil dives into the minds of the various faces of evil in the DC Universe. Character discussions include Lex Luthor, Catwoman, Ra’s and Talia al Ghul, Bane, Scarecrow, Penguin, The Rogues, Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Black Adam, Red Hood, The Riddler, Man-Bat, Brainiac, Star Sapphire, Sinestro, Zod, Ocean Master, Cheetah, Vandal Savage, Deathstroke, Darkseid, and many more.

Necessary Evil not only acknowledges the comic roots of these characters, but also incorporates the rich history of cartoons, movies, and video game story lines. Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman, Superman: The Movie, Man of Steel, Justice League, Green Lantern, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Teen Titans, Batman: Arkham City, Injustice: Gods Among Us, as well as several installments from the recent Direct-to-Video DC Universe Animated Original Movies series are discussed and used as prominent discussion elements throughout the feature.

Over the last few years, DC Comics and Entertainment have put a significant focus on their rebranded launch of “The New 52”, and it was nice to see that while the recent comics were touched on in this documentary, the true legacies and stories of these characters were not overlooked.

So is evil truly necessary? You will have to check out this documentary and see for yourself.

Rating: ★★★★☆
ComicsOnline gives Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics 4 out of 5 evil schemes.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
