2016: A Holy Year for Geekdom Movies

2016 in movies comics online 2

BY THESE FANDOMS COMBINED, WE CALL UPON… 2016! This year’s line-up of films looks to be the biggest geekdom movie year we have seen in possibly our lifetimes. Starting off with a bang, we ushered this year of geekdom movies in with Deadpool, and the Merc with a Mouth has not disappointed. With a $284.5 million opening weekend, and breaking more box office records than I have fingers and toes, it seems that 2016 is starting off on the right foot.

The lineup of this year is a crisscrossed mash up. A list made up of comic movies, animated adventures, video game movies, and born again pop culture phenomena will be gracing the silver screen. With geek oriented movies breaking into the box office at a rate of three per month, or one almost every week and a half, it’s going to be a busy year! It seems that we will need to pace ourselves just so we don’t burn out trying to keep up with this breakneck pace.

“I started the greatest year of comic book movies? You’re welcome”

In the realm of comic movies, we have at least nine movies in our lineup. Deadpool kicked off the year on 02/12. That leads us into the much anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice releasing on 03/25. From there, we move into the ultimate month of Marvel warfare with Captain America: Civil War on 05/06 and X-Men: Apocalypse on 05/27. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, comes back with the second installment of the Michael Bay relaunch on 06/03. We then close out the summer with explosions, death and lots of mayhem on 08/05 with Suicide Squad, a title I have been eagerly awaiting for quite a while now. We then get to wrap up the year with Gambit on 10/06, Underworld 5 on 10/21 and Doctor Strange on 11/04.

If you are more of a gamer, have no fear! This is the year for you. In a fandom that rarely sees a movie that makes it to theaters, the gaming community can unite with three big box office movies this year. The gaming line up starts with Sony’s Ratchet and Clank releasing on 04/29. Blizzard’s Warcraft storms into theaters with the sound of an angry stampeding horde on 06/10. We then finish off the gaming year with Ubisoft’s Assassins Creed on 12/21.

Let’s take a look into the world of resurrected pop culture phenomena. 20 years after its original box office debut in 1996, Independence Day: Resurgence crashes into theaters on 06/24. In what some consider paying homage to the late Harold Ramis, 27 years in the waiting, we are getting a new Ghostbusters movie on 07/15.

 Star_Wars,_Rogue_One
Oh, but we’re not done yet! Star Trek: Beyond, the third installment of the rebooted Star Trek franchise of movies comes out on 07/22. Then, fresh off the success of last year’s Star Wars: The Force AwakensStar Wars: Rogue One hits theaters on 12/16. A Star Trek movie and a Star Wars movie in theaters in the same year? If that doesn’t get you even a little bit excited about this year then,“I find your lack of faith disturbing.” You can expect ComicsOnline.com to be at the forefront for all of these titles.

To show our excitement, we have made up a chart of what we are looking forward to seeing. Take a look, use it to set your calendars, use it like a bingo card, make it into a poster, whatever you like but remember where you got it: ComicsOnline.com, your home for EVERYTHING geek pop culture.
