Advance Review: My Adventures with Superman – “Adventures of a Normal Man” (Series Premiere)

Superman returns…to television! Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen take center stage in a new animated series titled My Adventures with Superman, launching this week on Adult Swim & MAX. This show puts a new creative spin on Clark’s early adventures with the Daily Planet, his friends, and his path to becoming a hero.

“Adventures of a Normal Man” – Parts 1 & 2 introduce viewers to a younger Clark Kent (Jack Quaid, The Boys), who is still attempting to figure out his past & future as he starts his first day of work at the Daily Planet as an intern. Along with his best friend/roommate/intern Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid, A Knock at the Door) and more experienced intern/aspiring reporter Lois Lane (Alice Lee, Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist), the trio will have to “earn their stripes” and work together to establish themselves as journalists. When deadly technology is stolen, Lois rallies the troops to go after the big story, despite the wishes of Perry White. When the tech turns out to be giant robots, it will be up to Clark to step in and save the day…from a distance. With his powers inadvertently revealed, he must find a way to hide his identity from his friends and stop new threats to the city.

Quaid does a wonderful job voicing Clark Kent, and his chemistry with Lee comes across perfectly in the first few episodes. Lee definitely understands the passion behind Lois Lane, as her vocal performance stands out as a true highlight. Sahid’s Jimmy Olsen is a very different take on the character, as his high level of energy adds even more to their friendships and working relationships.

My Adventures with Superman features Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) as executive producer, with Jake Wyatt (Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus) and Brendan Clogher (Voltron: Legendary Defender) as co-executive producers, and Josie Campbell (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) as co-producer. The first season includes ten (10) 22 minute episodes, which will debut first on Adult Swim (starting Thursday, July 6th) and then will be released the following day on MAX.

From the very first moments of the pilot, viewers will notice that this is a very different Superman story. The animation style, writing, characterization, humor, and music all seem fresh, with a new approach that we really haven’t seen before from a Superman show or comic. The best comparison that I can make is that it feels a lot like Voltron: Legendary Defender, which isn’t that surprising with the creatives listed above. The lighter tone makes the show very accessible for all ages, but the approach that they’ve taken to these well known characters will keep you invested in their success. It’s rare that we see something this different with Kal-El and his world, and I am definitely onboard to see where this goes.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
