Comic Book Review: Adventures of Superman – Jon Kent #5

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

Many people deal with issues with their father, but not too many deal with issues with a dystopian universe alternate reality version of their Dad (at least I hope not. If you’re suffering from issues with your Dad related to the murder of your alternate universe Mother and his choices thereafter, ComicsOnline can help). Jon Kent faces universal displacement, disappointment, and Daddy issues (the dreaded three D’s) in Adventures of Superman – Jon Kent #5!

Official Synopsis:

The Super Sons are reunited and up against an entire world of Injustice…but in this penultimate issue, will Jon Kent have a hope of returning to his Earth? It’s a battle for the soul of Superman and the safe return of the Super Son as the Injustice saga cranks up the heat!

Creative Team:
Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Clayton Henry
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Wes Abbott

Jon Kent, learning what happened to his father during INJUSTICE, struggles to reconcile his feelings in the light of the atrocities his father has committed in the pursuit of justice and peace. Damian confronts Clark about his suspicions regarding Jon, and the proof of his claims, but Clark still shows reluctance. Has Jon’s arrival spelled doom for Superman, or for Batman and his insurgency?

The INJUSTICE universe provides ample opportunity to tell interesting stories, and Taylor and Henry have really capitalized on this opportunity. Taylor intrigues with his handling of Jon Kent’s exploration of what it means to be Superman when Superman himself has essentially been lost. Jon and Harley’s exchange about her part in INJUSTICE is a great example of the moral difference between Jon and this world’s Clark Kent, and helps to exemplify the fundamental differing of their beliefs in what is just and right. Henry does a fantastic job in this issue, as well. The guilt that Harley feels, the anger Jon feels, these emotions leap off the page in Henry’s panels. The climactic confrontation in this issue is dynamic, and does an excellent job of highlighting the level of threat that Batman and his insurgency face, and this is in no small part due to Henry’s ability to animate both emotion and action while making it look easy.

Adventures of Superman – Jon Kent #5 is a fantastic read, and I think the events of this series will shape the Jon Kent we see in the future. If you were to spend money on just one comic this week, I think you’ve found it.
