Advance Review: Wonder Woman #1

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

Lies, butt-whoopings, and government agents galore! Things aren’t looking good for the Amazons in America. This week, DC kicks off Wonder Woman #1 with a bang (and some smashes, crashes, cracks, and wacks)! Let’s check out what cool new threatening acronym comics bring us this week!

Official Description:
THE AMAZON WARRIOR IS NOW A WANTED OUTLAW! A NEW ERA FOR THE AMAZON WARRIOR BEGINS, FROM THE SUPERSTAR TEAM OF TOM KING AND DANIEL SAMPERE! After a mysterious Amazonian is accused of mass murder, Congress passes the Amazon Safety Act, barring all Amazons from U.S. soil. To carry out their plans, the government starts a task force, the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.), to remove those who don’t comply, by any means necessary. Now, in her search for the truth behind the killing, Wonder Woman finds herself an outlaw in the world she once swore to protect! Writer Tom King (Batman, Mister Miracle, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) and superstar artist in the making Daniel Sampere (Dark Crisis, Action Comics) join forces for this action-packed relaunch and the beginning of what will undoubtedly become a groundbreaking run on the character.

Creative Team:
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Daniel Sampere
Colorist: Tomeu Morey
Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Trouble is a’brewing in America after an Amazon goes berserk in a bar, killing over a dozen men. Seeking redemption (read retribution), Sergeant Steel is tasked with rounding up the Amazons, and ensuring they leave. Less interested in who or why, he executes his orders by any means necessary (a lot of them aren’t leaving alive). Where is Wonder Woman during all of this? She’s been oddly silent while all of this happens. Most importantly, who is the Sovereign and what does he hold that could be the key to everything?

With a reputation like his, it’s no surprise that Tom King slays the writing in this issue. While it was surprising not to see more of Wonder Woman in the first issue of her comic, the story that King builds here is interesting, and is stronger for her absence (which I’m sure will be a topic of conversation in the issues to come). There is some great commentary given during one of the fights that gives us some great insight on King’s approach to Wonder Woman in this run. There is also what seems like a great set-up for some secret history that goes back hundreds of years and sets up some great possibilities for what is to come, as well as some fantastic commentary on the way particular groups of people are treated during troubled times.

To say this comic is stunning would be selling it short. Sampere and Morey really set the bar high on this one. The character designs look amazing, the shading is great, and the action is DYNAMIC. Several of the panels would make fantastic variant covers or prints. I’ve been impressed with a lot of comic art this year, but this issue is a standout that ranks among my highest for most captivating to look at. Wonder Woman has never looked better.

This book is firing on all cylinders. The action, story, and art have been turned up to eleven. King’s name is already a “satisfaction guaranteed” sticker, but this book will put its entire team on your radar (if they weren’t already). Never before have I been this interested in a Wonder Woman comic book, but the next issue can’t come out fast enough. As stated on the cover, a new era (truly) begins!
