by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

John Stewart returns for new adventures in his own ongoing series! The Dawn of DC continues to shine a spotlight on the mysterious events that took place in outer space. Why has John Stewart left the Green Lantern Corps? What caused the United Planets to take such drastic actions? And what exactly is the impending threat from “Another Place, Another Time”? Find out all this and more as John Stewart looks for answers in Green Lantern: War Journal #1!

Official Synopsis:
John Stewart’s time as a Green Lantern has come to an end…or so he thinks. A family tragedy calls him back home, and as John begins to reclaim the brilliant career he once left behind, he tries to embrace a peaceful post-superhero life. But when a terrifying and contagious force with a mysterious connection to Oa appears on Earth, the last Green Lantern of another universe comes seeking the only warrior to face this threat and win: the immortal “Guardian and Builder,” John Stewart himself! Can this brilliant but brash young Lantern help John discover the qualities that made him one of the greatest Lanterns of the entire Multiverse?

Previously in Green Lantern (“Homecoming” Parts 1-3)
John Stewart arrives on Earth for some quality time with his mom. Without plans to return to space, the heartfelt Stewart family reunion is a welcome change for John as he tries to figure out the next step in his journey. The reunion is short-lived however, as readers are whisked away to a different universe and time, where an elderly Guy Gardner and his protege, Lantern Shepherd, face off against an invasion by the mysterious Revenant Queen. The odds get a bit more even, as an alternate version of John Stewart arrives on the scene. Can these heroes fight off an impending horde of seemingly dead Lanterns?! Although the mysterious new threat escapes into the multiverse, we learn that Lantern Sheppard is headed our way to lend a hand to OUR John Stewart! TO BE CONTINUED…

Now in Green Lantern: War Journal #1
It all has been building to this. How do you leave behind life as a Green Lantern? As John continues to figure out how to return to a “normal life” after living as a soldier amongst the stars, his return to Earth is rudely interrupted by a new member of the United Planet’s Green Lantern Corps. This inexperienced Lantern has been tasked with “reclaiming John’s ring”, despite the fact that John doesn’t actually have one… The novice recruit will soon learn the error of his ways, as John demonstrates just how powerful he has become WITHOUT a ring! Meanwhile, the Revenant Queen has broken through into our universe and attacked a team of astronauts in outer space. How does this new threat have a power ring, and what does this mean for our heroes? The Lanterns will need to act fast, because this new menace is about to kick things into overdrive.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting to see the bigger picture plans John Stewart since the release of Green Lantern #1’s “Homecoming: Part One“. The exploration of John’s attempt to leave the GL Corps, and the subsequent PTSD that came from his service, is a truly interesting concept. When you’ve had the creative power of a Green Lantern Power Ring at your disposal for years, it seems like it would be extremely traumatic to give that up. I imagine that it would feel like you are moving underwater, feeling the weight of the world on you with every action you take. Johnson handles these elements with care, as John struggles to return to a life and family that he left behind. I also loved the interactions with his mom, especially his approach to helping her through her mental struggles. Montos’ art style continues to impress with each passing page, and Lucas’ color choices perfectly complement the bold tone of the book. These two are a visual dynamic duo and I can’t wait to see how they play with constructs and the new villain in subsequent issues. Also, Sharpe deserves a shout-out for the wonderful lettering of Lantern Varron, as the unique creative choices helped to set the tone and further differentiate this new character from the other lanterns.

Green Lantern: War Journal #1 is a bright new start for John Stewart. Make sure you add this title to your pull list.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
