Comic Book Review: Transformers #2

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Giant robots have arrived on Earth, and our lives are never going to be the same. Transformers #2 from Skybound Entertainment hits the shelves this week, with a new story that showcases the more personal side of the Cybertronian War.

Official Synopsis:
THE SMASH-HIT SERIES CONTINUES! The Decepticons have been unleashed! As Optimus Prime and Autobots regroup, Starscream terrorizes humanity. This issue features a surprising first Energon Universe appearance!

After escaping from the Ark with the help of his new human friends, Optimus Prime assesses his new surroundings. The Autobot leader quickly learns how precious and delicate life is on Earth, and commits to protecting the beings of this planet from the evils of the Decepticons. Although many of his friends can eventually be revived, a few (Bumblebee) are seemingly lost forever. Meanwhile, the Decepticons wreak havoc on humanity, realizing how squishy humans are. In several vicious moments, we get to see a new level of evil for the villainous robots in disguise. Does the small contingent of Autobots stand a chance against this threat?

Writer/Artist Daniel Warren Johnson (Do a Powerbomb, DC’s Wonder Woman: Dead Earth), Colorist Mike Spicer (Do a Powerbomb, Still Water), Letterer Rus Wooton (Invincible) and Energon Universe Showrunner Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) release the second installment of the new Transformers ongoing series. There are some truly intense moments in this latest issue. Optimus has a tragic revelation (poor Bambi) and provides Spike/readers with backstory on Cybertron and how they came to be on Earth. Johnson does an incredible job channeling the empathy and compassion of this leader, and it is beautifully depicted in the opening pages down to the sound effects (*place* pulled at my heartstrings). On the flipside, Starscream’s choice of squishing as many humans as possible was royally messed up. We’ve never really seen the Transformers intentionally try and kill off humans in this fashion, and it was pretty shocking to see them act in this way.

Much like Void Rivals set the stage for Transformers, this chapter lays a bit of groundwork for the new G.I. Joe series (and associated spin-offs). We won’t ruin the specifics, but there is a big setup moment with a VERY familiar name. We will spend some more time with the G.I. Joe debut next week, but it definitely got me excited about the shared Energon Universe connection to that launch.

Transformers #2 is a sensational second installment in this new ongoing series. Make sure you grab your copy this week!

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
