Comic Book Review: WildC.A.T.s #12

by Tony Rhea, Reporter

All good things, as some might say, must come to an end. The WildC.A.T.s most recent adventures come to a shocking conclusion this week in WildC.A.T.s #12!

Official Description:
In a final, climactic battle for control of HALO and all its secrets, it’s the WildC.A.T.s versus the Seven Soldiers versus the Court of Owls! Winner take all!

Creative Team:
Writer: Matthew Rosenberg
Artists: Danny Kim & Tom Derenick
Colorist: Elmer Santos
Letterer: Ferran Delgado

The WildC.A.T.s take on the HALO Corporation in a climactic, no-holds-barred confrontation. While Spartan and his group take on the Void and her army of cyber-soldiers, Grifter and his team take on Halliday and the Talons of the Court of Owls. Cray receives some help in changing his situation, while the Seven Soldiers have their hands full with some familiar faces. Decisions are made and lives are changed in the exciting conclusion!

Rosenberg has really done the WildC.A.T.s justice. This reinvention of the team has been very narratively satisfying, unendingly exciting, and the pedal has been to the metal since issue #1. Grifter and the rest of the team really get to cut loose and the conclusion is really something. Void has been established as terrifyingly powerful, and Halliday has a well-established army in the Court, so the conclusion to both of these stories proves to be very satisfying. Grifter’s surprising play is a great pay-off to this storyline, and allows for some great character development for him down the road. While I did anticipate some more permanent results coming out of this issue, I’m glad that we are left in place where further adventures are possible (although there are some characters that may not be along for the ride).

Kim and Derenick provide visually stunning and exciting fights in this issue, and some truly great moments. The narratives stakes in this issue feel raised all the higher by the fantastic art, and almost every character gets a great moment to shine. If indeed we get further adventures with the WildC.A.T.s, Kim and Derenick almost certainly need to be involved, as much of what is great about this series is tied directly to their work.

I’m more than satisfied with this conclusion to this story, and excited for the future of these characters. Nothing but good things have been delivered, and hopefully there are great things yet to come.
