Comic Book Review: Spider-Punk Arms Race #1

by Alex Kaplan, Guest Reporter

In a rock ‘n’ rolling good time, Spider-Punk Hobie Brown debuts a new adventure!

Official Description:
ENCORE! YOU WANTED MORE! In a world without NORMAN OSBORN, SPIDER-PUNK REIGNS! This ain’t no victory lap though – as HOBIE BROWN and team try to rebuild society, JUSTIN HAMMER & DOCTOR OTTO OCTAVIUS have other plans…like introducing the world to the SPIDER-SLAYING SENTINELS! Cody Ziglar (MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN) & Justin Mason (SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK GENESIS) reunite to bring the Brooklyn boy back with the whole crew you know and love! Grab your boots, your instruments, your amps and LET’S GO!

Spider-Punk: Arms Race #1 opens with Spider-Punk and crew taking on the LZRDZ, Hobie is quickly reprimanded by a mentoring T’Challa for the collateral damage caused. But while Hobie, friends, and the Wakandans are busy trying to rebuild America, Justin Hammer and Otto Octavius are up to no good. After cheekily tossing in the word “superior” a few times, their latest project is revealed. A first run at spider-slaying sentinels! That’s not the only surprise in store for our alternate universe Marvel characters. Bullseye makes an appearance!

While Cody Ziglar’s youthful dialogue can lean a bit forced, the narration and immediately apparent individuality in character personalities are a treat. Justin Mason’s art features plenty of fluid movement in action sequences. The large and splashy panels on some pages really work to grab a reader’s attention. With gritty coloring from Morry Hollowell, this post-disaster world is fully recognized. Travis Lanham also throws in some talented lettering.

Rating: ★★★★☆
