Comic Book Review: What If? Venom #1

by Zoe Gaussoin, Reporter

Just when you thought you were the only one plagued with symbiotic creatures, She Hulk makes your worst Tinder date look like Steve Rogers.  She met him at church. He swept her right off her feet. He was smooth, dark, and had a long tongue he kept her wrapped around. How could our heroine resist?

Official Description:
Years ago, in a familiar church tower, the Venom symbiote was spurned by Peter Parker and found a willing host in the vengeful and wrathful Eddie Brock! Or, at least, that’s the story you know! From rising stars JEREMY HOLT (MARVEL’S VOICES: SPIDER-VERSE) and JESÚS HERVÁS (MARVEL: UNLEASHED) comes an ALL-NEW look at what makes the Marvel Universe’s most sinister symbiote tick, with What If? Venom #1, a journey that reimagines its earliest days bonded to a host with a rage and temper ENTIRELY different from those of Eddie Brock!

In What If? Venom #1 artist Jesus Shervas and color artist Cecide La Cruz collaborated flawlessly while expressing the cycling emotions and growing gravity of She Hulk’s symbiotic bond. Recently revitalized comic stories seem to be immersed in intergalaxy hopping and extensive character expansion. Jeremy Holt centers the Venomverse at Our Lady of Saints Church. What If… She Hulk sauntered in to save Eddie just as the cocked gun clanked against his teeth? I felt drawn in by the shared origin between Brock and She Hulk.  I was also enticed by how quickly their parallels split off for a drastically different experience for our heroine.

The symbiote was drawn to Eddie Brock who was broken, furious, and writhing with hatred. But he could smell the anger in her blood and taste the strength of their bond. Who would guess the life saving gamma irradiated blood infusion she got from her cousin, The Hulk, was the very thing Venom would lap up?

After a vicious cycle of amnesia riddled nighttime play and exhausted work days, She Hulk’s new symbiotic lifestyle transforms her into the homeless Central Park boogeyman. Who is the little birdie that sent Sabertooth and his screeching belt? What does Jake Lockley’s appearance under the Moonlit Knight mean for our hulking beauty? How will the boss in Chinatown react to Wolverine’s snikt snikt SNIKT and piercing questions?
