Blu-ray Review: Event Horizon

The classic Sci-Fi Horror film Event Horizon is now available on Blu-ray! This film features Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) and Sam Neil (Jurassic Park) along with Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo 13) and Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck).

Story

In the year 2047 Earth receives a distress call from the out reaches of Neptune. The distress calls seems to be coming from an experimental ship called the Event Horizon which was destroyed on its maiden voyage over 7 years ago. We learn that the Event Horizon was not actually destroyed but was actually testing a new gravity drive which would create a mini-black hole as an energy source to allow it to skip from place to place and just disappeared. The Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue ship is dispatched to find out what happened to the ship and its crew. Heading this expedition into the unknown is Captain Miller (Fishburne) who begrudgingly takes on the Event Horizon’s creator, Dr. Weir (Neil) as a passenger on this recovery. Upon arriving at Neptune we learn that the ship is more or less in shape but things are definitely not what they seem. The crew begin to experience visions of terror. People start taking their own lives. The question of where did the ship go becomes more and more important but also, what has this ship become? The team try to leave the Horizon but when accidents start occurring they realize that they are now trapped on this horrific ship.

Overall

This Sci-Fi horror film is brought to you by the same team of Paul W.S. Anderson and Producer Jeremy Bolt who created 2008’s version of Death Race. It is apparent when comparing the two movies that these guys have the concept of a action thriller/horror film down. Anderson actually turned down directing the first X-Men movie to make this film. Event Horizon was a great Sci-Fi Horror film for its time and really doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

ComicsOnline gives Event Horizon 4 out of 5 creepy missing spaceships.
