DVD Review: Spectacular Spider-Man Volume 4

It has been far too long since The Spectacular Spider-Man has aired new episodes… I forgot how fun this series is. The series follows Peter Parker as the teenage-nerd-turned-genetically-enhanced-superhero Spider-Man as he fights crime and survives high school, and seems to draw influence from the Spider-Man movies and Ultimate Spider-Man comics, as well as the original comic story. The hip character designs really capture the essence of the characters and action sequences are really exciting thanks to the energetic animation. The show also features an excellent cast of voice actors, led by Josh Keaton as Peter Parker.

Newcomers to the series will probably want to jump in at the beginning, but if you already know the basics, volume four is the entire symbiote story arc, offering some of the best moments of the first season, including the appearance of the Sinister Six ("Group Therapy") and the exciting season finale featuring Venom ("Nature Vs. Nurture"). The first episode, "Persona" also features the Black Cat, voiced by Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer. The four episodes clock in at a little over 90 minutes, and are cohesive enough to play out like a movie or as individual episodes.

Overall, there is plenty to like in volume 4 of Spectacular Spider-Man. Fans of the series get an awesome story arc with some of the best episodes of the season, while Spidey fans get a fun interpretation of the character at his best, wise cracking and running circles around his foes. Really, any superhero fan should check this series out. It is a lot of fun.
