DVD Review: You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush

Throughout the campaign and his first 2 years in office, Will Ferrell parodied George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live. The sharp commentary and fratboy attitude made his George W. Bush impression a hilarious satire of the administration. He had a litany of characters, but Bush will be one that he will always be remembered for. In 2002, Will Ferrell left SNL to work in feature films. He would occasionally make appearances as George W. Bush here and there. At the end of the Bush Administration’s second term, Will Ferrell opened his one-man Broadway Show You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush. In fact, it opened on January 20, 2009, the final night of Bush’s Presidency. You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush is an hour and a half show recapping and satirizing the entire presidency of George W. Bush. The show talks about every major moment that hit the administration, and even moments of his life before he was elected. Those moments stretch all the way from his childhood, through his stint in the Army National Guard, and up through the presidential campaign. The DVD comes with a few Special Features. It has a “Road To Broadway” short, a "making-of" video for the show and special. The set also features a "Bush on Bush" Interview where Will Ferrell plays George W. Bush interviewing George W. Bush. It also has “It’s Time Has Come of Being a Decider, America: True or False Game.” Where you guess whether various "facts" about George W. Bush’s life, presidency, and administraton are true or false. You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush is the longest that Will Ferrell’s President Bush character has been performed at any one time. The show is a romp through the ex-president’s life that is funny at times, quite vulgar at others, and even goes a tad too far at one point. I was surprised to find only moments funny, and not the entire show. One of the best moments is the bit that runs throughout the show where a Secret Service Agent slowly starts to dance. The show isn’t exactly what I expected from Will Ferrell, and even from this character of his. It lacks humor, and I found it to be a little too self servicing to Will Ferrell. I’d recommend this for Will Ferrell super fans.
