DVD Review: Less Than Perfect Season One

Have you ever wondered about what a star has done, or where they went? What happened to Andy Dick after News Radio? Was Sherri Shepherd interesting before The View?  Who does Zachary Levi play on TV now? Eric Roberts did what before The Expendables and Sharktopus (would I lie about something like that?)? Well, just watch Less Than Perfect to see the answers.

Less Than Perfect has a news company temp, Claudia “Claude” Casey (Sara Rue – Popular, The Big Bang Theory) filling in for the assistant to the company anchorman, Will Butler (Eric Roberts – The Dark Knight) on the coveted 22nd floor. When Claude accepts Will’s offer of the permanent assistant job, not everyone shares her elation. Her friends from the 4th floor, Ramona Platt (Sherri Shepherd – The View) and Owen Kronsky (Andy Dick – News Radio) are worried she’ll change and not want to pal around with them, and new snotty co-workers Kipp Steadman (Zachary Levi – Chuck) and Lydia Weston (Andrea Parker – JAG) are afraid she won’t change. What ensues is the age old struggle between the cool and the un-cool. Of course as Kipp and Lydia try to sabotage Claude, or simply look down their nose at Ramona and Owen, it always backfires. But as the season progresses, the two cliques begin to like each other. Every episode is good and there are many high points in this season. Claude gets tipsy at the Christmas party and tells Will about her crush on him, Lydia falls in love with Claude’s brother, Claude has an office romance, Will gets engaged and Owen becomes a baby daddy.

What makes this show enjoyable are the cast and the writing. The show is written in such a way that no one is traumatized. When someone is the butt of a joke or the tables are turned, it all seems like a good joke is played and no one gets hurt – truly feel-good show. But don’t forget the all-star cast! Sherri Shepherd is a great outspoken, over-the-top party girl with a heart of gold. Andy Dick as the quirky nerd with two mothers speaks for itself. Andrea Parker and Zachary Levi skillfully play the not-so-fast-track snobs. The surprise is Sara Rue as the naïve, nice girl with a quick wit and a unique delivery style that makes this show a joy to watch and re-watch.
