TV Review: Stargate Universe – “Intervention”

Stargate Universe returns to Syfy Channel September 28th at 9pm, kicking off its second season with a bang!

Since the series premiered, fans were left wondering who had initially attacked the Icarus base and what their ultimate goal was. In the first season finale, those questions were answered as the Lucian Alliance, with forced help from Doctor Rush, was able access the 9th chevron and seize control of the Destiny. With the fate of the ship and all of its technology in the balance, the civilian and military crew on board the ship had to put aside their disagreements and work together to fight off this new threat. It seems as though all hope is lost during the final moments of the finale, viewers would have to wait and see if a majority of the cast would even survive the episode. Who will make it out alive and control the Destiny?

Opening moments after the first season finale, "Intervention" answers a lot of pending questions about the fate of the Destiny and her crew.

The overall theme of the premiere is the focus on the fight and desire for survival, and what the acceptable costs are to obtain it. The Lucian Alliance forces our heroes off of the ship at the first habitable planet, leaving only Dr. Rush and a few of the original crew on board to mount a rescue.

Meanwhile, the question of survival shifts focus to TJ and her unborn child, who were critically injured from a gun shot wound during the final moments of the previous episode. Fans will find TJ's subplot very interesting as we are teased about the fate of some of the other Destiny crew through what we believe to be a near death experience. The validity of the experience is definately in question, but it will raise a lot of new and interesting questions about the mythology of the show.

"Intervention" introduces both Robert Knepper (Heroes, Prision Break) and Julie McNiven (Mad Men) as reoccuring Lucian Alliance members who will come to play a large role on the ship. These two actors were extremely enjoyable additions to the fantastic cast and prove to be welcome additions to the show.

Fans can rest easy because the season premiere demonstrates once again that the series has found its stride. "Intervention" is a strong addition to SGU and allows for the show to tie back into its established history, and successfully lay the ground work for the future. The team on Stargate Universe quickly adapted with the second half of season one to give fans the action, humor, and depth that they wanted. Fortunately for us, all of those things are back in abundance. The new cast additions help solidify the episode and allow for some interesting new developments and dynamics to an already impressive program. Having seen the first two episodes of the season, I can say without a doubt that we are in for a treat.

ComicsOnline gives Stargate Universe "Intervention" 4.5 out of 5 hopes for the Destiny.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
