Blu-ray Review: Despicable Me

“IT’S SO FLUFFY!”

Gru is the greatest super Villain. Gru is evil. Gru is not your average neighbor. And Gru is definitely not the dad type; until now. This is the story of how three little orphaned girls, Margo, Edith and Agnes, found (in the most unlikely person), something they were searching for all their lives. Now you can own Despicable Me on Blu-ray!

Despicable Me finds Gru at a changing point of his life. Once the greatest villain on Earth, he finds himself taking a backseat to a new villain, Vector. To top it all off, his life gets turned upside down with the addition of these three little girls, thanks to one of his plans backfiring on him. However, in the process of trying to get his life back to what it once was, Gru finds that he can enjoy what his life has become.

With the voices of Steve Carell (The Office) as Gru, Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) as Vector, and the incredible Julie Andrews as Gru’s mother, Despicable Me entertains and amuses the young and old. The great direction of Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud and the creation of the minions make this movie one of the best animated movies of this year.

The number one thing that made this enjoyable right from the start was the Minions. The first time I saw the trailer with the Minions playing with the cow can I was hooked. The story of Despicable Me also captured my attention because of the innocence of Agnes, the littlest of the three girls. She views the world in unicorns and fluffiness, and she believes in the goodness of all men. Agnes gives all the unconditional love she has, making even a person like Gru change for the better.

Special Features:

The combo pack that this movie has is incredible. The blu-ray has many extras; my favorites being the 3 Mini Minion shorts. The mini-movies were created only for the blu-ray thanks to the minion mania. “Orientation day”, “Home Makeover” and “Banana” are the mini-movies included in the combo pack. The mini-movies between 3 and 5 minutes, starring the Minions, are phenomenal – “Banana” being my favorite. This is the story of one minion bringing a banana for lunch. There’s also Miss Hattie’s top secret cookie recipes where you can bake the cookies from the movie. Super Silly Fun Land and Gru’s Rocket Builder are interactive games. Another special feature is Gru control where the minions interrupt and do stunts while you are watching the movie, interviews from the cast and scenes from the trailers of the actual movie make it extra funny.

Overall:

Despicable Me features fantastic animation, imagination, and humor and really can be enjoyed by everyone. The humanity that is conveyed through the use of CGI is truly astounding and this is definitely a movie worth your time. The additional short films included in this combo pack are also quite hilarious and make this release that much more impressive.
