Holiday Gift Guide 2012: Matt’s Top 5 Blu-ray/DVD Releases

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The holidays are quickly approaching, and ComicsOnline’s Managing Editor is back with a few suggestions on what to get for that pop-culture lover in your life. Here are a few fantastic items that have come out in the last year that would definitely make an impact this holiday season!

5) The Muppets Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack

The Muppets have returned to our lives with the new movie called…The Muppets, now available to own in an amazing Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Combo Pack! Having grown up watching the original Muppet Movie countless times (I was born a little late for The Muppet Show), I was excited, yet hesitant when this newest endeavor was announced. The last few Muppet theatrical installments were…Less than great (I’m looking at you Muppets In Space), and didn’t really meet expectations. Upon hearing that the 2011 film was being written by Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) and Nicholas Stoller (Undeclared), with original music by Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Concords) I was slightly reassured. But how will the new film compare to my childhood memories of Kermit and the gang?
The newest Muppet movie, The Muppets, can be summarized with one word: perfection.
The Muppets knocks it out of the park from beginning to end. There was a moment in the film where the telethon begins and they start with “The Muppet Show Theme Song”, and I got chills. Why? Because this film got everything right. When so many memories of my childhood are being destroyed with remakes, The Muppets succeeds from start to finish on being an endearing movie that people will love. I had a smile on my face from beginning to end and I cannot remember the last time that I had that much fun watching a movie. There should not be a question of “if” you will see this movie, it is more a question of “when”.

4) Ultimate Avengers Movie Collection and Marvel Animated Features Movie Collection on Blu-ray

Getting ready for the live-action release of The Avengers? Lionsgate Home Entertainment has you covered! Assembling for the first time are the Ultimate Avengers Movie Collection and the Marvel Animated Features Collection, featuring adventures of the Ultimate Avengers, as well individual stories focusing on The Hulk, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange! These blu-ray releases are available in 3-disc sets, or as one complete 6 film collection!

3) The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season

The Walking Dead have returned! The second season of the hit series from AMC and mastermind Robert Kirkman has finally made it’s way to our homes, just in time for marathons before the new season starts in October. What horrors must our favorite group of survivors face this season? Who do we meet along the way? Why is Shane going crazy? All these questions will be answered in The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season, now available to own on Blu-ray and DVD!

2) Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on DVD

Back in 1993 when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first premiered, it was uncool to be a fan of the show. A group of teenagers are given powers by an alien wizard, and told to go fight evil monsters each week! Not cool enough for you? Oh, they also have GIANT TRANSFORMING ROBOTS!!!

Twenty years later, guess what is still on television? POWER RANGERS.

It may have taken some time, but now it is easy to say that you are a fan of this show that has endured for TWO DECADES on American television, and has become a world wide sensation! Not many shows can say that. Now, for the first time EVER, the original seasons of Power Rangers are coming home to DVD thanks to the fantastic people at Shout! Factory and Saban Brands. Fans have waited long enough, so to help kick off the release, Shout! Factory has also teamed up with Time Life for some massive collector sets of the show! This new Time Life/Shout! Factory release features every single episode from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

1) Marvel’s The Avengers on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack

After years of anticipation, Marvel finally released The Avengers in theaters this summer. The largest (and one of the most epic) superhero endeavors ever brought to the big screen, the film features Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) standing up to fight the foes that no hero could face alone (with a little help from S.H.I.E.L.D.). We had known that The Avengers would be coming since first the epic post-credits scene from Iron Man, but we still were unprepared for this masterpiece from Writer/Director Joss Whedon (Cabin In The WoodsFireflySerenity). Now you can get your own copy of Marvel’s The Avengers in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack!

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
