Blu-ray Review: Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom

by Traci Gabaldon, Reporter

As a parent, I am always looking for movies that will not only entertain my children for quiet time, but movies that I can watch with them and find equally entertaining. I can certainly say that Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom does both. It is a cute animated film that not only tells a good story, but is entertaining to children with its creative animated characters.

Howard Lovecraft is based on a graphic novel with the same name. It tells a story of a young boy named Howard (Kiefer O’Reilly, Legends of Tomorrow), whose father is in Arkham Sanitarium for going insane. As he visits his father, he is given a warning not to use the legendary Necronomicon. That night, he opens the portal anyways, and enters a strange frozen world that has terrifying creatures. Afraid and alone, he befriends a scary looking creature who he names “Spot” (Ron Perlman, Hellboy) aka Shoggothx, and together they embark on a journey through the Frozen Kingdom. During the course of the journey, Howard discovers a truth that not only may save the kingdom, but may ultimately help his father as well.

In addition to O’Reilly and Perlman, the voice cast also includes Christopher Plummer (Up) as Dr. West, Jane Curtin (Saturday Night Live) as Algid Bunk, Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) as Nyarlathotep, Scott McNeil (X-Men: Evolution) as Goblin, Alison Wandzura (The X-Files) as Sarah Lovecraft, and Tyler Nicol (Pixies!) as Winfield Lovecraft. The story was written and directed by Sean Patrick O’Reilly.

Overall

I thought that Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom was entertaining and a great family movie. It has a good story, the animation is creative, and the characters are interesting. I recommend this movie for families with children who like a little spookiness.

ComicsOnline gives Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom 4 out of 5 monsters.
