Comic Book Review: Spider-Man #7

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Dan Slott promised this was gonna be a big issue, and boy did he and the team deliver! End of the Spider-Verse Part Seven: “Spider-Genesis” has arrived, featuring the final standoff between Shathra (the ancient wasp totem) and our Spider-themed heroes from the multiverse.

Spoilers Ahead True Believers!

The explosive cliffhanger from Spider-Man #6 revealed Cindy Moon’s place in the universe and the revelation that she was in fact The Chosen One from Earth 616! While the Web of Life and Destiny starts to repair itself, the web-warriors finally seem to have the upper hand in their battle against Shathra. And with his connection to the Web of Life and Destiny cut, what role will Peter Parker of Earth 616 play when he isn’t even the Amazing Spider-Man anymore? It will take every Spider in the multiverse (including a few surprises) to stop the threat that will truly mean the End of the Spider-Verse.

End of the Spider-Verse: Part Seven “Spider-Genesis” exceeded expectations as the story-arc came to a close. Juggling countless Spider-themed characters sure seems like a cake-walk for Dan and the team, as they managed to give many of our favorites time in the spotlight (more Mayday Parker would still be appreciated). It is thrilling to see Cindy Moon take center stage during the event, and hopefully we will get to learn more about the importance of her role as The Chosen One in her upcoming solo series. I can honestly say that I wasn’t expecting a massive mecha battle sequence in this issue, but it was seamlessly executed as part of the grand finale.

If you follow Dan on social media, he has been implying the impact of this particular issue and the reveal of his new favorite Spider. With today’s release, we are pleased to announce the introduction of…SPIDER-BOY! You read that correctly. This new hero was apparently disconnected from the Web of Life and Destiny, but his secret origin and backstory will be revealed this June in EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #3 (story by Dan Slott and co-creator Humberto Ramos). We know Dan and Humberto have a lot planned for Bailey, and we look forward to learning more about this new character.

In a recent press release from Marvel Comics, Dan shared these thoughts:

“I can’t wait for people to meet Spider-Boy, and the unique role he’s going to play in both Spider-Man’s world and the Marvel Universe,” Slott said. “I grew up reading Spider-Man comics. He’s my favorite character in all of fiction. All I ever wanted to do was tell stories with THIS cast, and it’s been the coolest thing ever to co-create some of the characters who populate it. And this kid, this Spider-Boy, is THE one I’m most psyched about!

“On the art side, two absolute SPIDER-LEGENDS are bringing Spider-Boy to life. My longtime collaborator, Humberto Ramos and the amazing Mark Bagley.

“The all-new, all-different Spider-Boy of the 616: He’s got strange new spider-powers, secret ties to dark corners of Spider-Man lore, and a story that’s all his own… that is right about to begin!”

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
