Comic Book Review: Radiant Black #26 – Versions A & B (SPOILER FREE)

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

The Catalyst War continues! After the shocking events of Radiant Black #25, Marshall and Nathan are faced with impossible choices as impending doom looms overhead. What exactly is the first trial that the heroes must face from The Premier?

Creative Team:
Writers: Kyle Higgins & Joe Clark
Pencilers: Marcelo Costa & Eduardo Ferigato
Colorists: Rod Fernandes & Raul Angulo
Letterer: Becca Carey

If you missed out on Radiant Black #25, we learned that the “Kyle Higgins Twist” (patent pending) was that there were actually TWO versions of the book. Depending on which cover you bought (Version A or B), a different story plays out with Nathan and Marshall each wielding the Radiant Black powers for The Catalyst War. That’s right… we seem to be getting DOUBLE the Radiant Black stories! After the issue was released, Higgins revealed that readers will get to see how scenarios play out for each of our favorite Radiant(s) Black. So if you only picked up one copy of Radiant Black #26…you might need to call your local comic store and see if you can get the other book. Despite the dual narrative opportunity, I just want to go on record as being #TeamNathan…Just sayin.

The arrival of The Premier on Earth has sparked new challenges for our heroes. How would you handle an alien armada showing up on your doorstep? Thanks to the creative efforts of Higgins and team, we get to see very different approaches to the situation at hand. Ferigato and Angulo have created an intense spectacle for Marshall’s tale, while Costa and Fernandes crafted Nathan’s adventures. The action sequences were beautifully designed throughout both iterations, and I also appreciated the balance of important character moments. Events play out very differently for each hero, and it will be interesting to see how much the war will diverge in subsequent books. These chapters were definitely worth the wait, as the creative team continues to raise the bar for the already impressive series.

Rating: ★★★★★

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
