Advance Review: Invincible: Season 2, Part 2 (MINOR SPOILERS)

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Fear not fans – Invincible has returned for Season 2, Part 2 from Skybound Entertainment and Prime Video! Mark Grayson must come to terms with the harrowing battle on Thraxa, and his world will never be the same. ComicsOnline had the pleasure of viewing the final four episodes of Season 2, so minor spoilers ahead.

When we last saw Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun), he had been briefly reunited with Nolan/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) on the planet Thraxa. This reunion revealed the existence of Mark’s rapidly aging half-brother (to be named later), but the discussions were cut short by a surprise attack from the Viltrumites. General Kreeg and his warriors nearly killed Mark and left him behind on the planet, taking Nolan back to their world for execution. The new season picks up quickly after the cliffhanger, dealing with the immediate fallout from the battle. Mark heads back to Earth (with new baby brother along for the ride) and has to figure out his life and the mysterious message from his dad. As if that weren’t enough, Mark continues to deal with the challenges of maintaining a relationship while acting as a superhero and the role he wishes to play with the Guardians of the Globe. Speaking of the GotG, our favorite superhero team has been quite busy during Mark’s absence, facing down multiple major threats that have taken a toll on the team. Fans of the comics have an idea as to what’s coming, and there are some major moments ahead for Mark and the Guardians…Oh, and did we mention that Angstrom Levy is pretty mad about the events of the first few episodes?

Invincible Season 2 stars returning cast members Steven Yeun, with Sandra Oh, Zazie Beetz, Grey DeLisle, Chris Diamantopoulos, Walton Goggins, Gillian Jacobs, Jason Mantzoukas, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Kevin Michael Richardson, Seth Rogen, and J.K. Simmons. Invincible Season 2 also features the vocal talents of Sterling K. Brown, Peter Cullen, Rob Delaney, Calista Flockhart, Phil LaMarr, Luke MacFarlane, Tatiana Maslany, Scott McNairy, Jay Pharoah, Ella Purnell, Tim Robinson, Ben Schwartz, Rhea Seehorn, Lea Thompson, Paul F. Tompkins, Shantel VanSanten, and Josh Keaton. The executive producers are Kirkman, Catherine Winder, David Alpert, Simon Racioppa, Margaret M. Dean, Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, and the co-executive producers are Helen Leigh and Walker.

There is so much to say, but as we need to keep this spoiler free until the new episodes release, let’s just say that the casting director deserves a raise. Sterling K. Brown’s Angstrom Levy continues to wreak havoc in Mark’s life, taking the multiversal shenanigans to new heights. Clancy Brown also makes a mark as General Kregg, providing a pitch-perfect voice casting for this pivotal role. Jason Mantzoukas steals the show as Rex Splode faces some of his most shocking moments (I’m still not over this experience from my original monthly reading of Invincible). Josh Keaton (The Spectacular Spider-Man) also gets time to shine in the back half of the season with a wonderful role that is sure to be a crowd pleaser (again, no spoilers and no implications). During SDCC, Robert Kirkman and I were talking about the inclusion of Peter Cullen (best known as Optimus Prime from Transformers) for Invincible Season 2, and his performance as Thaddeus couldn’t have been any better.

I know that it was a long wait for the Season 2 premiere, and that it was another long wait until the back half was released, but these episodes are just perfect. The animation, the performances, and the story as a whole are insanely good, and I have nothing but positive things to say about the episodes to come. I’ve been a fan of Invincible since the comic first hit the stands, and this continues to be the best (and most faithful) adaptation of any comic to television. Don’t miss out on “THE BEST SUPERHERO SHOW ON TELEVISION.”

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
