Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

by Greg Uke, Reporter Let me begin this review by saying that the 80’s was a pretty weird time.  They didn’t seem weird back then because I was just a kid, and whatever you experience at that age gets normalized….

Movie Review: The Avengers

Assemble the movie stills!  There are a lot of them in here.

Sorry I’m not sorry.

by Karissa Barrows, Editor

If you have not been excited for The Avengers since first hinted at in the Iron Man franchise, you have no soul.  Or whatever.  Maybe not that extreme, but DUDE.  The movie was destined to be either a massively awesome, mind-blowing life experience or the worst 2+ hours of life.  As soon as it was announced that Joss Whedon was directing the film, I knew the former would be the case.  I went to see the movie after having driven for 16 hours the day prior and still getting up super early that morning, and I was so pumped up afterwards that I was able to stay up for two hours more than normal playing Modern Warfare 3.  Seriously.  It is that good.  I’ll explain why… and try my hardest to be as brief as possible.  That’s gonna be hard, considering how much I loved this movie.

iPad App Review: Avengers Origins: Hulk

by Mike Favila, Reviewer

After reading the fun Avengers Origins: Assemble! (read my review here), I was curious to see if there would be any major differences in the pacing of this app. With the same writer (Rich Thomas) and the same excitable narrator (Stan “The Man” Lee), would this just be more of the same? Amazingly, I found a more intereresting, engaging adventure.

iPad App Review: Avengers Origins: Assemble!

by Mike Favila, Reviewer

With the upcoming theatrical release of the inevitable blockbuster The Avengers, Marvel have released two apps to tie in which should appeal to a younger audience. Avengers Origins: Assemble! is the first cannonball from the promotional might of Disney, but it’s charming on its own merits and hits the mark.

High School is Hell

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

Fifteen years ago, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on television and the success of its seven seasons (or twelve if you include Angel) brought supernatural action drama into being, leading inevitably to today’s supernatural shows ranging from The Vampire Diaries, through Supernatural and Being Human, and into the occasionally-clothed and always sexy True Blood. But Buffy had a few things going for it that the others did not. Notably here are its clever and ubiquitous self-referential humor and perhaps most importantly here is that Buffy possessed something that most other supernatural shows never had. It was in the beginning set in one of the most frightening places on earth: High School.

Geek Gift Guide 2011: Top 5 Things To Get Your Geeky Girlfriend

by Ashley Penrod, Assistant Editor

So, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, buy stuff, blah blah. All of that holiday cheer is here, yet again, for 2011! Take your shopping fears and woes out of the equation, because here are a few words that should calm your noël-rattled nerves: “Here is some stuff I can buy for all of my cool friends”.  Brought to you by yours truly, because this is pretty much what my list looks like. And I’m the coolest. I’m also a girl, so look elsewhere for a list filled with stupid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Madden NFL, because that is not what your geeky girlfriend wants for Christmas. As a matter of fact, considering that this is, literally, my personal wish list, we could probably just call it: “What Your Geeky Girlfriend Probably REALLY Wants For Christmas”. In no specific order of desire:

10 Things I learned from being a Zombie on a movie set

A few weeks ago, I played a zombie in a short film called ‘Zombie Man‘ (by Solar Light Films). You might have read about my make-up test here.
It was a really fun and crazy shoot, but I also learned a few valuable lessons, which I am happy to share with you all.

Forget about what you should do in a Zombie Apocalypse! Most of us already know – if you don’t, just google it!

The following is what I’ve learned from playing a ZOMBIE on a film set in a nature preserve for one day.

Pay close attention and take heed! You’ll thank me later.

Movie Review: Green Lantern

by Matt Sernaker, Senior Editor

After years of waiting, fans of Green Lantern are finally rewarded with a big screen adaptation of their favorite ring slinging hero. Without any question, this IS a Green Lantern movie. All of the elements that fans would hope to see brought to life now exist on screen for the first time ever. To be a Green Lantern, you must have the ability to overcome fear, and while there was much debate over the final quality of this film (mostly concerning casting choices and CGI), I believe that audiences will be pleasantly surprised by the story of Hal Jordan of Earth.

Have no fear, but beware of minor spoilers!
